Dental Emergencies

Dental problems become dental emergencies when they cause uncontrollable bleeding in the mouth, pain or facial swelling. These problems require immediate medical attention to stop the bleeding in the mouth, reduce the pain, or save your teeth. Some dental emergencies include:

  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Toothache
  • Tooth injury
  • Dental infections
  • Infected mouth sores
  • Abscessed gums
  • Advanced gum disease

When dental emergencies occur, try to manage the symptoms in the meantime. For instance, if your oral cavity is actively bleeding, apply light pressure to the affected area to stop the blood flow. When you call our office, we can take you in the same-day for emergencies, even if you’re a new patient.

What to Expect When You Go for an Emergency Dental Appointment

When you have a dental emergency, we can work in you on our schedule the same day. We will schedule an exam where we will examine your mouth, teeth, and gums and take an x-ray to determine the cause of your discomfort and the level of damage it has caused. If the affected area is too painful, we can numb it first using dental anesthetics before examination. From here, we will figure out the best treatment method for your dental problem.

During the examination, we will ask you questions on the cause of the problem and any dental treatment that you had received in the past. We will also try to identify any signs related to different dental diseases. After examining you, we will try to relieve any pain you are experiencing with medication, either orally or via injection. After that, we may give you any necessary antibiotics to clear up any infection or swelling in the affected area.

We will also provide a temporary solution to your dental problem if you need to come back later for a permanent procedure, such as tooth repair, a root canal, or a tooth extraction.

Is an Emergency Room Good for Dental Emergencies?

Just like many Americans suffering from painful dental problems, you might be tempted to go to the ER. However, this is actually not a good idea since emergency rooms cannot do much to help with dental issues. The most that a hospital’s ER staff can do is treat you with antibiotics or painkillers to tide you over before seeing an emergency dentist. In the end, you’ll only be left with a temporary solution and a huge hospital bill.

Dental emergencies can be debilitating and even life threatening if they are not dealt with in a certain amount of time. Don’t just deal with severe tooth pain—get in touch with our office as soon as you notice your symptoms!
