Crowns and Bridges

Most of us reach a point in our lives where we will need a tooth repaired and sometimes even replaced.

If you have a tooth that is fractured, decayed, or damaged beyond what a dental filling can repair, Dr. Call may recommend a dental crown to restore your tooth. A dental bridge is an option that can replace a missing tooth and restore your smile.

Today’s crowns and bridges are made of ceramic porcelain and customized to match your teeth so they blend flawlessly with your smile. Here’s what you should know if you need a crown or a bridge.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Designed to closely mimic your compromised tooth, a dental crown replaces your entire tooth structure with a high quality porcelain restoration customized to complement your smile. Your crown fits over your remaining tooth structure, so it protects the health of your root.

A dental crown provides all the esthetics as well as function of a natural tooth, so you’ll be able to eat and chew with ease. You’ll also be able to brush and floss around your crown so you can easily maintain your oral health.

What Happens if I Don’t Get a Crown?

If you’ve been told that you need a crown, it’s likely your tooth is in one of these situations:

  • Deeply fractured, cracked, or broken
  • Needs to be strengthened after root canal therapy
  • Deeply decayed
  • Needs a restoration for a dental implant
  • Has an old filling or crown that is damaged, broken, or lost
  • If you don’t repair a decayed or fractured tooth, you are putting your other teeth at risk as they will have to compensate for the damaged tooth.

Tooth decay can also cause discomfort, especially when it reaches the root of your tooth. It’s important to repair a decayed tooth in order to prevent the damage from progressing and causing bigger problems.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

Are you missing one or multiple adjacent teeth? If so, you understand how this greatly affects your ability to properly chew your food and talk to others with confidence. Did you know that a dental bridge may be an excellent option for restoring your smile?

A bridge relies on two crowns that use healthy teeth as anchors with prosthetic teeth in between. Dental implants can also be used as anchors for a bridge, allowing the restoration of multiple missing adjacent teeth and providing the additional benefit of keeping the jawbone healthy, which provides better longevity for your bridge.

Dentures and Partials

  • What Causes Tooth Loss?

There are several reasons why your natural teeth might be missing, damaged or failing. Gum disease and tooth decay are the leading causes of tooth loss, but teeth grinding, teeth misalignment, genetics, and certain medications can also contribute.

Whatever the cause, dentures can be an excellent solution for people who experience tooth loss. If the word “dentures” makes you think of your grandparents’ false teeth soaking in a glass, you might be interested to learn that there is more than one type of denture! From full or complete dentures that replace a full arch of missing teeth, to partial dentures that replace one or more missing teeth, to implant-supported dentures supported by two or more dental implants, there are plenty of denture options to help restore your smile.

Living with multiple teeth that are missing or failing greatly affects the quality of your life.

Failing teeth cause discomfort and difficulty eating and chewing the foods you normally enjoy. A compromised smile may cause you to feel less confident when you’re talking, which may lead to hiding your teeth when you meet new people.

If this sounds familiar, RGC Dentistry has some excellent solutions to help you reclaim your life.

  • What Is a Full Denture?

Dentures have received a bad reputation over the years for being ill-fitting or unnatural looking. The truth is, today’s modern dentures have an innovative design so that they fit your mouth and complement your facial structure and skin tone better than ever before. This allows them to provide not only a beautiful smile, but also a more youthful appearance for many patients.

A full denture is an oral appliance customized to replace an entire arch of teeth. It is removable and typically made of acrylic. Dentures rely on an excellent fit that secures them to your jaw and helps them stay in place. They can easily be removed at night for cleaning while you sleep.

Because they rely on jaw support for fit and function, dentures will have to be adjusted or relined to ensure proper fit as your jawbone is always changing.

  • What Is a Partial Denture?

For patients who are missing multiple teeth but also still retain plenty of healthy teeth, a full denture may not be necessary. A partial denture is another type of removable appliance that uses metal clasps as anchors to your healthy teeth and has prosthetic teeth strategically placed to fill in the gaps.

Because the prosthetic teeth look very natural, today’s partials truly complement your smile. Like dentures, they can also be easily removed for cleaning.

  • How Do Dentures Stay in Place?

Traditional dentures stay in place by tight suction from your gums and receive support from your jaw bone. For dentures to work, you need to have healthy gum tissue and adequate bone level. If you have lost a lot of bone and gum tissue, the dentures will not fit as well and might move around. If you have trouble keeping your dentures in place, an over-the-counter denture adhesive can be used.

There are a few factors that will determine which type of denture is best for you. These include the number of missing teeth, the condition of your gums, and your budget. These days all types of dentures are more realistic than ever, and provide a better match to your natural teeth so you can regain your beautiful smile!

  • What if My Denture Doesn’t Fit Properly?

Perhaps you are already living with a denture that moves and slips while you speak or eat? This can be frustrating, but the good news is that Dr. Call has solutions to help your denture fit better.

Dental implants can be used to anchor an ill-fitting denture and keep it securely in place, providing security when you’re eating and talking. Implants also offer the added benefit of stimulating your jawbone, which helps prevent bone loss and promotes longevity for your denture.

  • Signs You Might Need Dentures

Do your teeth move when you chew or open your mouth wide?  You might be at risk of losing some of your natural teeth. Are you missing several teeth, especially large molar teeth?  A dentist can help you determine whether your teeth are able to be saved, or whether tooth replacement should be in your future dental plans. If you have loose, missing or damaged teeth, contact us to schedule a denture consultation with Dr. Call in Surprise, AZ.

SAME DAY CROWNS

Fixed in a Day: Same-Day Crowns

A damaged tooth can affect not only your oral health, but also how you feel about your appearance. Instead of hiding your smile due to a damaged tooth, you can fix it fast. That’s why RGC Dentistry offers dental crowns that you can get in a single visit to our dental office! Read on for more info about same-day crowns and why they're so popular.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a cap that goes over a damaged tooth. Crowns are made from porcelain, resin, ceramics, and metals. Crowns are used to protect, cover, and restore the shape of your teeth when fillings don’t solve the problem.

Your dentist will determine the best material to use for your crown. Crowns require the same care you would give your natural teeth, good oral hygiene! Best of all, you can get an exam, consultation, and a crown all on the same day.

What Are Same-Day Crowns?

As the name implies, a same-day crown is one that is designed and fitted the same day. Dentists use an intraoral camera as well as computer-aided technology to create a 3D image of your damaged tooth which acts as a digital mold. They will then use a CEREC machine to make your ceramic crown based on the digital mold.

The CEREC machine is an advanced technology that is used to get impeccable results for patients. Instead of multiple visits to the dentist and a temporary crown that is necessary with traditional crowns, CEREC makes it possible to get a durable, natural-looking crown in just one dental office visit.

Pros and Cons of Same-Day Crowns

As with anything, there are pros and cons. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to same-day crowns, it’s important to have all the facts to make an informed decision.

Pros

  • Further injury is prevented when a crown is placed on a damaged tooth the same day.
  • Patients have full use and function of their teeth immediately after the procedure.
  • Having fewer dentist visits saves money.
  • CEREC crowns fit perfectly and match your natural tooth.
  • CEREC crowns are precise and not painful.
  • Same-day crowns prevent damaged teeth from decaying.

Cons

  • If you need a metal-based crown or a gold crown, the machine cannot make those types of crowns.
  • Technology can’t tell if there is damage below the gums.

Who Is the Best Candidate for Same-Day Crowns?

Although we all want speedy results, some patients are a better match for traditional crowns. You may be better off with a traditional crown if you have:

  • Cosmetic demands
  • Issues grinding your teeth
  • Excessive wear
  • Damage below the gum line

If you’re hiding your smile because of a bad tooth or because you don’t think you have time to take care of getting a crown, same-day crowns are an option that’s worth considering. Our experienced staff will help you get a great result while saving time and money! Best of all, the entire process takes place in one day.
